Crandall University Chargers Boxing has been identified by USports Canada to field a team of boxers to represent Canada at the 2020 FISU World University Boxing Championships scheduled for October 2020 in Poland.
Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) is the key driver to expand the role and reach of university sport around the world. In addition to its bi-annual Summer and Winter University Games, FISU also coordinates sport-specific championships for athletic competitions that are best served outside of the Summer and Winter games. Since 1963, the Championship seasons have taken place during even-numbered years, thus filling the gap in the international university sports calendar between two World University Games seasons.
Sports served by the Championship seasons include wrestling, rugby, cheerleading, speed skating, badminton, climbing and others. The 2020 Championship for boxing is scheduled for October 10-15 in Katowice, Poland.
"We are excited to be taking a team to the FISU Boxing Championships. I think we might be the first Canadian University to participate in this event. We have some talented boxers who should do very well," Jon Ohlhauser, Head Coach, Crandall University Chargers Boxing.
U-Sports Canada is the official University Sport agency in Canada that provides for the administration of competitive sports conducted between member institutions. It also serves as a Member Association for FISU and facilitates the connection of specific university sports to FISU competitions.
"All FISU competitions to the end of August 2020 have been cancelled due to COVID-19. We are hopeful that the situation will stabilize and allow for the Boxing championship to take place in October. If it doesn't, we will be ready for the next time the championship tournament is scheduled," Ohlhauser.
